Top 10 Transgender Video Game Characters

The following is a list of the top 10 video games with transgender characters.

1- Poison (Street Fighter/Final Fight)

Poison is a video game character who debuted as a common enemy in the beat-em-up game Final Fight. She would later join the Street Fighter series in a non-playable capacity starting with Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact, eventually becoming playable in the cross-over game Street Fighter X Tekken and later joining the cast of Ultra Street Fighter IV. She also becomes playable in Street Fighter V.

2 – Bridget (Guilty Gears Series)

Bridget has a feminine figure with female curves and slender arms and legs. She has blond hair and wide emerald green eyes. Bridget appears to sport the attire of a nun.

Bridget (Guilty Gear is a fictional character in Arc System Works’s Guilty Gear video game series. Bridget first appeared in the 2002 video game Guilty Gear X2. … Bridget was created as an “acute character” by Daisuke Ishiwatari, who wanted to vary the games’ cast.

3 – Gwyndolin (Dark Souls)

Dark Sun Gwyndolin guards the honorary tomb of Lord Gwyn in Anor Londo. The tomb can be found by using the spiraling staircase on the rotating bridge while the bridge is in its lowest position and descending to the second accessible bonfire. If the player wears the Darkmoon Seance Ring in this location, Gwyn’s statue will vanish and Gwyndolin’s fog door will be revealed. The player can then either pledge allegiance to him and his Blades of the Darkmoon or dare to trespass the fog door behind of which he dwells in, thus commencing the boss battle.

4 – Erica Anderson (Catherine)

Erica Anderson is one of the main characters in Catherine, a puzzle-platformer adventure game with multiple endings created by Atlus. Erica is a “post-op” transgender woman, who works as a waitress in the Stray Sheep Inn. Erica is presented as flirtatious and surprisingly tolerant of the casual transphobia that other characters display throughout the game. This characterization has been criticized by some fans due to the way in which it deploys stereotypes of trans women as being self-deprecating and sexually deceitful.

5 – Birdo (Super Mario Bros. 2)

Birdo’s gender identity has been the subject of much discussion. She has been described as “infamously gender-confused,” though Nintendo has been inconsistent in its description of her gender identity. Game designer Jennifer Reitz suggests she underwent a Mario-universe version of gender confirmation surgery, while others speculate that she has to hide her identity in exported versions of the game because only Japanese consumers will accept her as a trans character.

6 – Sheik (The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)

Although Sheik’s gender is continuously debated , Nintendo representatives have said that “Sheik is a woman–simply Zelda in a different outfit” (Riendeau, 2014). That said, in Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS, Sheik is a playable character and not described as a transformation of Zelda. Nintendo similarly declared that Tingle, who first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (2000), is not, despite much speculation, meant to be a gay character. There are several articles asserting that Link, or at least one of the Links, could be gay , but none of the arguments are very conclusive.

7 – Leo (Tekken 6)

Leo, also know as Eleonor Kliesen, is a German character who first appears in Tekken 6. When first introduced, Leo is only referred to in gender-neutral terms, as can be seen in the character’s prologue text available here. The character also wears what is often interpreted as gender-neutral clothing. However, in the subsequent game Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Leo is referred to with female pronouns in the character’s ending description (copied here). According to a public talk by one of the game producers, Leo is “a female, actually.” Other sites repeatedly quote Namco representatives as saying Leo’s gender was intentionally ambiguous because they wanted “character players will love regardless of gender” .

8 – Faris Scherwiz (Final Fantasy V)

Faris is a pirate captain and playable character in Final Fantasy V. Although the character appears fairly androgynous, it is revealed later in the game that she is female but was raised male by the pirates. She reportedly refers to herself as male and female throughout the game. In one scene, two of the other player characters, Bartz and Gaulf, realize Faris is a woman while walking in on her while she is sleeping. Both also immediately seem to fall in love with her, though the video shows her kicking them out. Later it is revealed that she is the long-lost sister of Lenna.

9 – Flea (Chrono Trigger)

Unfortunately, all the early trans-friendly characters were villains, but in 1995’s magical role-playing game, Chrono Trigger, we were introduced to the character named Flea (left), a magician of renowned boss-level strength in the game. Spotting pink hair, a skirt, and ample cleavage, he gave the greatest pro-trans video game line ever: “Male or female, what difference does it make? Power is beautiful, and I’ve got the power.” Along with that, he also has a “diva form” in which his character sprite gives challengers a hardy laugh or blows kisses.

10 – Naoto Shirogane (Shin Megami Tensei Persona 4)

Naoto is a playable character in Persona 4 (part of the Persona series). Naoto is typically described using the pronoun she, but some sites have suggested Naoto is meant to be a trans man character. In most descriptions, Naoto is presented as a female character who typically wears male clothing. Naoto passes as a man and Kanji falls in love with Naoto (though he doesn’t really express this until he finds out her assigned sex is female). Naoto’s Shadow appears to be transgender, however, and at one point prepares for a “body-altering operation” (Naoto Shirogane). Like Kanji’s Shadow, this might indicate that Naoto is meant to represent a character coming to terms with their gender identity, but how the audience is meant to interpret Naoto’s identity seems to be left ambiguous.
